The D1 Nationals were held jointly with the 4000s and ISOs at the Royal Western Yacht Club in Plymouth from 28th-30th June. Many boats arrived on the Thursday and set up in bright summer conditions although still a little cold for the time of year. This historic naval setting had ideal scenic views and a perfect area for some great sailing. We were greeted by a very friendly, enthusiastic and helpful team at the Royal Western with Sam Hannaford running the overall event.

Friday brought ideal sailing conditions, with a good breeze, sunshine and relatively flat water. The first few races set the pace for the weekend with Nick Craig winning all four races, Stuart Halman recording four seconds, Jason Pyke with three thirds and Michelle Collier-Brooks with two fourths and a fifth.

Saturday was a little lighter breeze which made for a few positional changes, however Nick still coming home first in all three races but Martin Spencer recorded two seconds and a fifth, with Michelle getting two thirds and a fourth.

Saturday evening all the competitors were treated to a very tasty three course meal in the Royal Western which was much needed after two days of hard racing.

The wind had swung to an offshore breeze and was up again on Sunday. A very long course was set but with just two laps.

The first two races were run and then we had a long delay whilst a naval ship passed through and eventually moored up. Again Nick won the first two races, with Stuart getting two seconds.

The last race saw Nick retire with some boat issues allowing Stuart to get the first, with Michelle coming second and Martin third.

Thank you to all the race, rescue, beach teams, Sam Hannaford, John & Ollie from the 4000 fleet for their organising and to all the bar and kitchen volunteers.
