2024 got off to a great start last weekend, 23rd/24th March, at Datchet Water SC, where the WASZP UK Start of Season Championships were met with a mega turnout. A record breaking near-40 boats registered, but sadly the intense weather forecast kept a few at bay, with 33 keen WASZPers eventually competing across the weekend.

Saturday was right at the limit, with 6 short 10 minute sprint races held on a triangle-sausage course in winds anywhere from 15-30 knots. Luckily, we had an expert class coach on hand in Ross Harvey, who later talked everyone through the racing and showed us videos from the day over the free social evening meal.

Sunday was a much calmer affair with a shifty 7-15 knots gracing the chilly Datchet waters. The racing was very close all day, with big swings of fortune across every side of the course. The sun even graced the foiling armada with a welcome warm touch across the final 4 races to conclude a fabulous weekend of racing.

Overall, Peter Cope finished up 3rd, Roo Purves took 2nd and Sam Whaley took the win after a closely fought series.

Full results can be found here.

Next up on the WASZP UK calendar is class open training at Grafham Water on 6th-7th April. Enter now here and view future training and events: racehub.waszp.com/events?country=64
