RS Aero World Championship at Calasetta, Sardinia, Italy - Day 4

by Elena Giolai 29 Jul 2023 20:28 BST 26-30 July 2023

Sunday sees the conclusion of the RS Aero Worlds with the awarding of the rainbow titles in the various classes and categories, including youth and junior with many Italians in the podium zone.

Today three races for RS Aero 9 and two for the other RSAero 5-6-7 fleets.

The penultimate day of the RSAero Absolute and Youth & Junior World Championship, organised in Calasetta by the Lega Navale del Sulcis, was very long due to the variable wind in the late morning, which forced the Race Committee to interrupt the first race of the day for the RS Aero 7, 6 and 5 fleets, while the RS Aero 9, starting first, managed to finish it. After a two-hour wait, the wind turned to mistral and the race committee moved to race course 'B' to the right of the port of Calasetta, opposite the previous one. Fortunately, the new wind stayed at 10 knots, allowing two races for all fleets.

It was a very positive day in the RS Aero 6 category for Lega Navale del Sulcis' Davide Mulas, who scored two firsts and entered the top ten in the provisional overall ranking one day from the end: "It was a very difficult day, but I interpreted the race course well: in the first race I stayed where the wind was strongest, while in the second race I saw that it was turning to the right and I went to the end of the race course to the edge that led me to the first windward mark. ' declared Mulas as soon as he returned.

Staying in the RS Aero 6 category, the Australian Rhett Gowans seems unassailable, who with a 2-6 on the day remains in the lead with a 13-point advantage over the American Creitz, now 5-2 and first junior. Still third overall is the Ukrainian Sofiia Naumenko (12-3). The Italians: fairly regular Andrea De Matteis from Gallura (YC Cala dei Sardi, Golfo di Cugnana), who maintains sixth place with a 3-8 on the day and is still first Youth. Not so well Giacomo Gatta (CN Savio) who with a 9-10, however, maintains ninth place; as anticipated Davide Mulas tenth, which could not have gone better today with the two victories achieved.

The RS Aero 7, the most numerous fleet, proceed with the British trio in the first three positions: Jack Miller took the lead, in great form today with a 2-1, which allowed him to overtake his rival Peter Barton, also taking a good margin of 6 points; behind Barton, Noah Rees (8-4) follows in third place. As for the Italians, an excellent day for Leopoldo Sirolli (Tognazzi Marine Village), who with a 5-2 move into sixth place in the overall standings and, above all, a solid first place Youth, with a good margin of 20 points over the second in his category, the Swede Erik Wahlberg. Not a brilliant day for the other Lega Navale del Sulcis holder Filippo Vincis, who with an 11-9 is nevertheless seventh overall.

In the RS Aero 5 women's RSAero 5 dominance of Britain's Chloe George (1-3), who leads with 19 points over Sweden's Elliot Hellstrom, first youth (2-6); still Great Britain in third place with Mark Ripley, who showed better feeling with the strong wind of the first days. The Italians in the top ten: With a 7-10, Giacomo Zanzini from Romagna (CN Rimini) is eighth and excellent first junior, 9 points behind the other Italian Enrico Loi (WC Cagliari), second junior. Francesca Ramazzotti (5-11, Veliamoci Oristano) maintained second place in the women's category. The only category with 10 races to its credit is the RS Aero 9 in which the three Americans remain in the first three positions: in the lead with a 2-1-2 today Madhavan Thirumalai, second Dan Falk (4-3-3) and third Keith Hammer (1-2-1).

Sunday is the last day of racing and with the tenth race the second discard will also enter for the RSAero 5-6-7 fleets and much may yet change.
