Musto Lark National Championship at Brixham Yacht Club - Day 2

by Megan Brickwood 29 May 2023 19:33 BST 28-31 May 2023

It was a bit of a late night for some of the sailors at the Lark Nationals last night, with crews union being a big hit, although of course nothing more can be said about that. A few of the sailors were a little happy to wake up to a postponement due to heavy winds and a big easterly sea state.

Much of the morning was then spent waiting for the conditions to settle down whilst ramping each other up for a big day on the water! The race committee made a good decision to hold the fleet ashore until 2pm leaving everyone to venture off to try Brixton's finest pastys and fish and chips!

Eventually we got afloat, arriving to the race course in a dying breeze around 12-14knots. The sea state was still pretty choppy with a big swell to make the downwind sailing a bit of fun!

Race 3 of the Lark Nationals was won impressively by Tim Fells and Fran Gifford, closely battled behind by Ed Braeburn and Holly Evans and in third Chris white and Sam Bailey! John Brickwood and Andy Hicks climbed through the fleet to finish the race in fourth closely followed by family members Nick and Stuart Hydon.

The wind was slowly easing off throughout the racing, but much to all the crews delight, still enough to stretch the legs and even do a bit of hiking.

The race committee called for a gate start for race 4 in now a light breeze. With the evening breeze easing off and backing right, Stuart and Nick Hydon wiggled their way up the right of the beat to take the lead of the race. Ed Bradburn and Holly Evans finished off a great day in second place again, to take the overall lead of the Lark Nationals by the end of the day.

Alan and his son Tom Krailing followed closely behind putting pressure on the overall leaders in a close battle for the chocolates. Overall, the day has been what can only be described as glamour sailing conditions, although not quite the 15-20knots that the fleet anxiously waited ashore for. The north easterly strong conditions look likely to continue for the rest of the event and so there will be a lot more exciting racing to be done.

Mid way through the week and the points are tight! Looking forward to a Lark Class dinner tonight hosted by Brixham Sailing Club with plenty of chat in the bar about the close racing of the day.
