32 double-handed crews from New Zealand yacht clubs took part in the recent SailGP Inspire event in Lyttleton.

Congratulations to Will Mason and Nelson Meecham at Wakatere Boating Club for taking a substantial victory with a massive margin, and to Madi Russell and Kate Rasmussen of Maraetai Sailing Club who were the first all-girls crew.

SailGP Inspire is held alongside the SailGP grand-prix event to provide youth with an opportunity to take part in a high-profile event, and to give spectators something else to watch and absorb.

“There is no better boat than the RS Feva for this type of event, and with the national champs and the RS Feva World Championships in Italy approaching, it got a lot of interest,” says Hayden of NZ Sailcraft

A free coaching clinic with Jenny Armstrong, Simon Cooke and Eric Stibbe was part of the package for the youth crew, and the event was supported by NZ Sailcraft and the RS Feva event with charter boats and transport arrangements. Sailors had a chance to go behind the scenes, attend tech tours meet the teams and get out to watch the F50 foiling catamarans in action.

Hayden says “We owe thanks to TS Godley for arranging accommodation and the use of four boats for the Christchurch crews, Hamish Milne from Burnard International for arranging freight logistics and Naval Point Yacht Club for hosting us and to Class President Shelley Liefting for her great organisation.”
