2022 Northern Area Solo Traveller Series at Budworth Sailing Club

by Alex Alcock 13 Oct 2022 07:46 BST 8 October 2022

The final round of the 2022 Northern Area Solo Traveller Series took place at Budworth Sailing Club on 8th October. The event attracted 33 entries including 15 visitors from various clubs from as far North as Edinburgh and as far South as Salcombe.

The forecast was for a Westerly, 10-15 knots, I'm told the best direction for Budworth. Allowing for a long beat going the length of the lake, enticing all variations of wind shifts and gusts.

The first race started promptly at 1100 and everyone got away clean first time. It was won by Alex Alcock of Leigh & Lowton, with Martin Honor of Ogston SC second and Budworth's own Philip Barnes in third place.

Following a break ashore to enjoy some homemade lasagne and fresh salad it was time for the second race. Again all 33 boats got off the start line at the first attempt and was won by Salcombe YC's Roger Guess from Martin Honor in second and Ian Hopwood (Nantwich) in third.

Following a short break before the third race the conditions had dropped slightly with ever increasing wind shifts. It was between Martin, Alex and Roger for the overall win. Although Ian Hopwood took the lead following some well-judged wind shifts up the second beat it looked like a fourth contender had entered the ring. However, after many more wind shifts and tactical plays it was again Martin Honor who took the win, followed by Steve Denison (Yeadon SC) and Philip Barnes in third place.

The overall event was won by Martin Honor, with Roger Guess taking second spot and Alex Alcock in third.
