RS Aero Open at Lymington Town Sailing Club

by RS Aero UK Class Association 16 May 2022 15:11 BST 14 May 2022

41 RS Aeros enjoyed a sunny early summer's day on the western Solent at Lymington with 25 visitors joining 16 local competitors.

The light south westerly breeze was boosted by the ebb tide against it, providing extra pressure and with it challenging start lines and long runs into the tide. Three races were set and all were to count so competitors needed to race hard to the end and carefully manage their risks and opportunities!

In the RS Aero 5s after two races David Ellis (Lymington Town) and Chloe George (Lymington Town) were tied with a 1,2 each and went into a final race showdown with Tom Ahlheid (Frensham Pond) just three points adrift. David did just enough with a 3rd to take the event win, Tom took the final race win to leapfrog up to 2nd overall with Chloe in 5th to take 3rd overall.

The RS Aero 7s saw the largest fleet with 22 entries and plenty of tight racing and opportunity as the fleet repeatedly compressed and extended with the tide. Chris Hatton (Lymington Town) showed great speed with two race wins, however a dropped mainsheet and swim in race two gave him a 10th which kept him down to 3rd overall. A steady 7,1,3 brought Andrew Frost (Sutton Bingham) through to 2nd overall. With no discard consistency was key and Jack Miller (Felpham) scored an impressive 2,2,2 to win the day.

The RS Aero 9s saw several late entries with sailors opting for the benefit of the extra power in the light breeze. They were joined by the new fledgling RS Aero 6 fleet to raceon a corrected time PY basis. Sam Mettam (Papercourt) was first RS Aero 6 from Graham Tribbeck (Lee-On-Solent) to take the overall fleet win. Nev Herbert (Lymington Town) was first RS Aero 9 from James Rusden (Highcliffe) in 2nd and Simon Geyman (Lymington Town) in 3rd.

Many thanks to all the volunteers at Lymington Town SC for a great day's racing and to Rooster and Selden for supporting the prizes.

At the end of the month the RS Aero UK Nationals take place at Paignton from 28-31st May and with 92 entries it is set to be a fantastic championship. For those who would like a warm up day on the English Riviera a coaching day is planned at Paignton SC this Saturday 21st May.
