Paignton Sailing Club ran the 2022 single handed open, POSH, over the weekend of the 7th and 8th of May. Seven Phantoms took part in the racing in Torbay, in a mixed fleet of 57 boats. The fleet was split into a slow and fast handicap each having a separate start, with the results being calculated on average lap time.

The racing on Saturday started promptly in a light breeze on a trapezoidal course, in warm sunny conditions. The first race saw a large shift to the right in the latter part of the race causing the last reach to the line to become a beat. Rob Cook from Northampton Sailing Club was first Phantom with Nick Orman from Castle Cove in second place.

The race officer re-laid the course for the second race with the wind becoming a little lighter. Nick Orman was the first Phantom, with Rob Cook in second place.

The wind was becoming very light and having started two fleets the race officer decided to abandon the race and the fleet returned to shore.

Paignton Sailing Club provided excellent hospitality on Saturday evening with curry.

Sunday was a little windier with around 8 to 10 knots and with four races planned the race officer again started promptly.

Nick Orman was the first Phantom in the four races on Sunday with Mike Webster from Northampton Sailing club in second place. Third places were being fought over between Rob Cook, Simon Heusen, Mark Spruce and John Evans.

On handicap calculations Nick Orman was overall winner of POSH, Mike Webster in 6th place, and Rob Cook in 16th place.

Thank you Paignton Sailing club for putting on a well run event, it should certainly be considered as an event in your calendar for next year!
