Frostbite Open at Ulley Sailing Club

by Rosalie Hill 19 Dec 2006 08:22 GMT 17 December 2006

A real menagerie fleet of 13 boats, from Merlin Rockets to Toppers, sailed for Ulley's Frostbite Trophies and other prizes on 17th December, which saw close competition amongst the leaders and a different winner in each race. The wind freshened to a consistent NW force 2 for the first two races, but rapidly died in the final race as dusk fell.

Race 1, with a set of tight reaches, saw Jamie Mawson(RS600) lapping everyone to complete the ten laps in little over 40 minutes but was won on handicap by Tim Vick making the most of the club's old Laser.

Race 2, sailing a predominantly windward/leeward course, saw Mawson alternating the lead with Tait and Hill's RS 200. The 600 was first to the finish line but the 200 clear winner on handicap.

Patience was rewarded for those who persisted in the final race, with Mawson first to the bell and Tim Brownell (Laser) just beating Tait to the line to win the race. Shetland's far travelled Roger Tait, with former Ulley member Georgie Hill, broke the tie to take the title over Vick, who won the trophy for first Ulley boat.
