Langstone Sailing Club celebrates 75th Anniversary

On the afternoon of Saturday 23rd March 1946, the reconstituted Langstone Sailing Club, dormant for many years, revived its activities when representatives of sailing clubs in the area added their support to nearly 80 sailing enthusiasts who had come forward to join the club.
According to archives from The Hampshire Telegraph, the opening ceremony was carried out by Dr. B. Norman, the newly elected President. Also in attendance was Mr John Leslie 'Les' Hudson, newly elected Commodore, and Mr. E. Stone, newly elected Secretary.
A junior section had also been formed for 14- to 18-year-olds and women could become 'associate members' (how times have changed!). Also, a design for a burgee was adopted using a blue background, with The Old Mill in red with white sails. The design remains the same today.
At the time, Dr. B. Norman paid tribute to a handful of members who had turned a derelict old, run-down malting loft, above the Ship Inn, Langstone, into a most attractive club room. He hoped that Langstone Sailing Club would do its best to encourage as much sailing around the neighbouring harbours as possible. 75 years on, Langstone Sailing Club, whose members now total around 500, still strives to hold true to that dream.
As a way of marking the club's 75th year and paying tribute to the past, present and future, Langstone Sailing Club plans a day of celebration on Saturday 11th of September, to coincide with 'Bart's Bash'. All members are encouraged to attend to help celebrate this significant day.
The Club has also launched a new logo celebrating the 75-year anniversary, which will be used in the Clubhouse, across the Club's digital platforms and in the sailing press.
"The 75th anniversary is a significant milestone for Langstone Sailing Club", Commodore Tim Wilyman said.
"We encourage all members to come to the Club and join the party, and trust this celebration is one befitting of our founders, current members and the future of the organisation too."
