The dust has settled on another fantastic Landsail Tyres J-Cup, hosted by the Royal Southern Yacht Club. Traditionally a cornerstone in the sailing calendar for the J/Boats community to come together, 2021 did not disappoint and the Cyclops team enjoyed meeting many competitors at the event, especially after a year so stinted by lockdown restrictions.

A great three days of racing saw some outstanding skills on show and Cyclops were excited to see many of the overall and race winners using their devices to help optimise performance.

Tony & Sally Mack's J/111 McFly, received a smarttune 1/2" (for standing rigging) and a Cyclops Gateway for their J-Cup triumph last year. The live load data provided by the sensor has helped the team hit their dynamic settings again, with McFly storming to victory this year in the J/111 class (a fleet in which the majority are now harnessing the power of Cyclops tech).

Early proponents of using Cyclops sensors as training tools in the J/70 class, World Champions Eat Sleep J Repeat also sailed to class victory. Having used a smarttune 5/16" in conjunction with sailing analytics software in training this season Paul Ward (Skipper) said: "We are using this on the J/70 now. Learning some good things already and more to come."

Paul's team came out on top in a J/70 fleet in which many have followed suit in using Cyclops sensors for training and coaching (live load sensing is not yet legal for J70 Class racing but an ideal training aid to help improve rig tuning & trimming).

The Cup saw a number of other Cyclops customers move up in their fleets and the difference is certainly showing as more J/Boats than ever are using Cyclops technology to get an edge on the competition.

Don't get left behind, make the simplest, most emphatic upgrade possible to your boat: get in touch with Cyclops today.

Cosmic Fate

As an official event sponsor Cyclops was able to award one participant with a smarttune and Cyclops Gateway. As so many of the leading boats in the fleet are using Cyclops technology already, this year Cyclops decided to award the prize at random. It just so happened that the winner was Patrick Liardet of J/70 team Cosmic, who also sailed to victory as 1st Corinthian team. The stars clearly aligned as there couldn't be a more deserving team to take home the prize. Congratulations to Patrick and Cosmic, who no doubt will put the technology to best use as a training tool in their continual drive for improvement.

Strength in Numbers

During the event the Cyclops team had fun demonstrating the simplicity of Cyclops sensors by running a "Pulling Contest", using Cyclops tech to find the strongest sailor. After some truly herculean pulling efforts the leaderboard can now be revealed:

  1. 267kg Callum Robbins J92 J'Ronimo
  2. 212kg Ancel Davidson J70 Cosmic
  3. 209kg Sam Cooper J111 Jitterbug
  4. 206kg Cian Byrne J111 McFly
  5. 199kg Jerome Carson J111 Kestrel
Congratulations to Callum Robbins who wins a day's trial of Cyclops load sensors onboard J'Ronimo for an outrageous pull which amazingly topped a quarter tonne!

It was a privilege to be involved in the J-Cup once again this year, so thanks to all involved. If you have any questions about our technology please get in touch, or explore the product range on the Cyclops website.
