2000 Class Millennium Series 2020 Event 1 at Snettisham Beach Sailing Club

by Kev 'Obi' O'Brien 29 Jul 2020 11:55 BST 25-26 July 2020

The 2000 Class Association have returned to sailing for the first time since before lockdown in collaboration with Snettisham Beach SC near Kings Lynn to deliver their first Millennium Series event for 2020.

Over the weekend of 25-26th July, 16 boats took part in the regatta with crews made up of family or 'social bubble' combinations. The event was able to take place due to the huge amount of space available at Snettisham SC which enabled 'social distancing' guidelines to be implemented for all. The sailing club kept the changing and showering facilities closed due to CV-19 but this didn't deter 6 travellers to make the journey, with a few camping on-site! That's a commitment to the sport they love.

The tide times at Snettisham meant that the first day's morning briefing took place at 0800 hrs for competitors, with the early start to racing this provided a convenient finish in the early afternoon allowing people to explore the local area or just relax having a BBQ and a few beers.

First days racing had a 15-knot building breeze with a steady 20 knots in race three. The racing was close and it was inevitable that the local top sailors and current National Champions Jasper / Laura Barnham would be battling with the 2018 National Champions Simon Horsfield and Katie Burridge around the race track.

Sunday's racing first gun was 0935 hrs which allowed for a little lie-in for all, and with the wind direction onshore allowed a great spinnaker reach to the starting area. The sun was out and the breeze was around 12 knots and building, with a few waves which allowed people to hone their downwind surfing techniques much to some people's advantage. For the final sixth race of the weekend, the breeze again built to a steady 20 knots with the sea state increasing.

Everybody came off the water smiling with some looking tired, for many this was their first time on the water for 2020. 6 races were sailed in the regatta in total and the final results were close throughout the fleet. The winners were decided on the final race. Simon Horsfield and Katie Burridge took place 1st place with Jasper/Laura Barnham coming 2nd both on 7 points. Father and son Chris/Tom Hall (Snettisham SC) took 3rd on 14 points.

A huge thank you to Snettisham for putting on a superb well-managed event with 'social distancing' guidelines. The club's hospitality was first class and supported all the travellers where they could.

2000 Class Association 2020 UK National Championships are good to go!

The 2000 Class Association has spent the last 4 months planning their National event being hosted by Brixham YC. The week-long regatta is starting on the 16th August to the 21st August 20.

The association has invested significant funds to provide competitors with Zhik face coverings and provide 'social distanced' boat parking. Initiatives have also seen the use of modern technology to allow the regatta to be fully managed using Microsoft Forms for online registration. Competitors will also be kept up to date on race and result information via a WhatsApp competitors' group.

Race Officer Sean Semmens has worked tirelessly in creating a flight system to allow 'gatherings' onshore to be less than 30 people, launching in waves again to reduce the number of people gathering. The social calendar for the event has been reduced but Brixham YC is still providing catering with a booking system and food choice with 2 blocks of 2 hours sittings.

The entry limit has been reduced to 52 boats, and currently, the entry list is sitting at 38 boats. If you fancy entering then please send an email of interest to Early Bird entry fee is £180 until 31st July 20 thereafter it will be £200. Youth entry fee (Helm Only) £135 and Youth entry fee (Helm /Crew) is just £90.
