Harken 29er Virtual Series - Overall

by Nia Mccallum 9 Apr 2020 08:11 BST 6-8 March 2020

The final day of the Harken Virtual Regatta dawned. With the leaderboard close on points and two discards to play with, the fleet was pretty stoked.

As ever, preparation was key to regatta success. Not just pre-start mobilisation exercises to ensure max finger agility on the keyboard, but also the purchase some months earlier of most excellent broadband. So how did the fleet cope under pressure ?

Well Mr Ollie Evans (Gurnard Sailing Club) held his nerve clocking up a bullet and a third to just hold onto his position at the top of the leaderboard. Second overall on countback and first junior was Toby Bloomfield (Paignton Sailing Club) with a bullet and a sixth today. Coming from behind with a third and a bullet, Fin Armstrong (Royal Torbay Yacht Club) was third overall.

Our First Ladies Virtual Champion was Sonia Evans (Grafham Water Sailing Club) with a seventh and a second today. Second lady was Suzie Sturrock (Royal Tay Yacht Club) overtaking Emily Mueller (Hayling Island Sailing Club) with a second and an eighth. Emily Mueller was third lady with a ninth and a sixth today.

It bodes well for the future of our fleet that our juniors performed so well. Toby Bloomfield was first junior and second overall but our second junior was Tim Evans (Grafham Water Sailing Club) at sixth overall and Jake Wood (Hayling Island Sailing Club) at seventh. Good effort from our junior fleet!

First Senior was Troy Mitchell from Paignton Sailing Club. An impressive win given a broadband failure made him late to the start line for the final race. Note to self - change broadband supplier. Second Senior was James Willcocks and third Senior was David Batchelor from the Isle of Man Yacht Club.

Many congratulations to our first Virtual HARKEN female Champion Sonia Evans and our first Virtual HARKEN male Champion Ollie Evans. Many thanks to HARKEN for sponsoring our first Virtual regatta and providing such brilliant prizes which we will be presenting at the first post lockdown regatta.

The fleet will now rest before limbering up for the 29er NeilPryde Sailing Cup which will be opening for entry shortly.
