470 AND 49er CREWS MAINTAIN MEDAL ZONE POSITIONS

Team GB's 470 and 49er representatives kept their podium hopes alive today with some countable results in one of the steadiest breezes so far.

Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield have stayed in touch with the leading three boats as the men's doublehanded discipline reached its half waypoint inside Sydney Heads on course area D. "In the first race we were on the outer loop and were second at the windward mark but had a shocking downwind leg and dropped loads of places. You couldn't go down the middle of the course upwind or downwind as there was a light wind patch due to the Heads so you had to bang a corner and prey it was the right one," explained Nick after racing.

"We've basically used up our two discards but we're far from out of it. We've got a good position and have laid the foundations for the next half of the regatta. The big difference in attitude between this half and the next is about attacking for position. We'll be fighting for higher positions from now on while the last half of the regatta was about staying consistent," added Nick.

Ian Barker and Simon Hiscocks have consolidated their third place in the 49er fleet with a 9,5,4,4 today. They are eight points off the lead, which is shared by the American brothers, Jonathan and Charlie McKee (both Olympic medallists) and Finland's Thomas Johanson, a former Laser world champion, with four races left to decide the Olympic title.

"We had a fairly solid day, nothing flash. There were a lot of snakes and ladders (due to the wind shifts) so we did quite well in general as it was easy to get it wrong. Nicholson (Australia) went from eighth in one race to dead last which illustrates how easy it was to make a mistake. We need to pull our fingers out tomorrow and make up some of the deficit but hopefully the American and Finn will start concentrating on each other and leave us alone to do our own thing so we can start making up some points," said Ian.

Great Britain's Star and Finn representatives start their Olympic competitions tomorrow with two races each on course area E past South Head.
