RNLI Sprint Trophy at Scaling Dam Sailing Club

by Lucy Lingard 9 May 2018 06:39 BST 5-6 May 2018

The weekend of 5th & 6th May was the second of the Scaling Dam Sailing Club Trophy Weekends, with the first having been held over Easter. The RNLI Sprint Trophy consisted of short general handicap races, each around 20 minutes long.

In bright sunshine with the wind blowing straight down the lake the first 2 races were held on a triangle course giving the spinnaker boats some enjoyable reaches. Half way through the second race the wind dropped away to nothing, coming back suddenly from the south.

After a quick break the next 2 races were held on a windward/leeward course. The short course meant hard work for everyone including the Race Committee who had a job keeping track of who was on which lap. As the fleet headed in for lunch the hottest competition for places was in the Topper 4.2 fleet with 3 points separating Erin Young, Tom Hunt and Sophie Brining.

Over lunch the decision was taken to drop the final race from the program and run three back to back races on a figure 8 course. While this should have suited the spinnaker boats it was not always possible to fly the spinnaker on the tighter reach, so a single shift or gust could make a big difference to places in each race.

The event was won by Barrie Thornton and Nick Hunt (RS400), with Lisa Metcalfe (Laser Radial) in 2nd and Paul Souter (Phantom) in 3rd. Top Junior was Nicky Jackson (Topper) in 7th place and the Novice award went to Will Howard (Optimist) in 15th. The capsize award went to Tom Hunt, who managed to lose his rudder!
