Enterprise Severnside Series Open at Bristol Corinthian Yacht Club

by Ian Wakeling 24 Apr 2018 09:54 BST 21 April 2018

Bristol Corinthian YC hosted the first event in the Severnside Series on Cheddar Reservoir on 21 April.

Seven entries waited until 2 o'clock for the rain to clear and the wind to arrive and allow 4 short races. It was worth the wait as the sun came out and with it an excellent breeze with a few shifts to keep the sailors on their toes. Choosing the right way up the first beat was key as Ian Wakeling & Jackie Leach from BCYC, and Richard Leach & Chris Palmer from Penarth YC both found, each leading the fleet only to eventually be passed by Phil Ford & Chris Keatley from BCYC, who went on to win all four races.

Johnny Allen & Anna Horackova from BCYC were second, beating Richard & Chris on tie break by virtue of two second places to one, Richard & Chris's second place being hard fought with Alice Allen & Lucy Meredith from BCYC less than a boat length behind and gaining as they crossed the line.

The Silver Fleet was also hotly contested with Mike Crees and Andy Richman, BCYC, winning from Dave Wiggins and new club member Mike Knott by virtue of half a boat length at the end of the last race.

Ken Falcon did a fantastic job as race officer and the galley volunteers provided a nice lunch and cake for after the racing.

The next event in the Severnside Series for the Dragon Trophy is 23rd / 24th June at Penarth YC. This is also the Severnside Area Championship and will be counted towards the Sailing Chandlery National Circuit.
