Olympic medallists make early statement at World Cup Series Regatta in Miami

Australia's Olympic silver medallists Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin are second overall and level on points with the leaders after day one of the 2018 World Cup Series in Miami, though an expected stronger breeze tomorrow is destined to test the world-class fleet.
The Nacra 17 pair stamped their authority early by taking first place in race one before coming in fourth in race two and a discarded 13th in the third and final race of the opening day.
"It was light and tricky here in Miami today and that's what we are here for," Darmanin said.
"We had a good first two races and just got punished by one mistake on the downwind of the last race. Still, Jas and I are really pleased with our performance and it's great to check back in with the fleet. It looks like there will be a breeze on tomorrow to mix things up."
Waterhouse and Darmanin are on five net points, alongside Austria's Olympic bronze medallist Thomas Zajac and crew Barbara Matz, and Italians Lorenzo Bressani and Cecilia Zorzi. The Australians are in second place on total points.
Fellow Aussies in the Nacra 17, Tayla Rietman and Lachlan White, are 18th.
Elsewhere, two races were staged in the 49erFX, where Natasha Bryant and Annie Wilmot finished 13th and eighth to be in 11th in the 21-boat fleet.
Australia's three Laser sailors had a challenging day but remain in contention. Rio gold medallist Tom Burton scored a four and 34 to end up in 14th place, Matt Wearn scored 27 and 11 to be two spots further back, and Finn Alexander, with a 26 and 17, is 19th in the 70-boat fleet.
