Zhik 29er National Championship at the WPNSA - Day 4

by Paul Hammett 16 Aug 2017 19:52 BST 12-17 August 2017

The 75 entries at the Zhik 29er UK Nationals were again greeted with champagne conditions as the wind hovered between 12 and 14 knots and the sun shone. Stuart Childerley and the race team got 8 starts in good time then a crews race as well.

Gold Fleet - Robins and Ozanne in the driving seat

Nick Robins and Billy Ozanne sailed another strong day with a 1,1,3,4 to put them into a 12 point lead with 3 races left to sail. With a 4th as a discard and the second discard coming into play it will need something very special for them to be caught. Hannah Bristow and Emily Covell had an impressive day with a 2,3,4,4 and similarly seem likely to have at least one hand on the Ladies Trophy. Max Clapp and Ross Banham along with Hannah/Emily seem likely to be competing for 2nd overall with only 4 points between these two. Another 20 points back are Ewan Wilson/Rory Rose on 57 points and Mathias Berthet/Alex Franks-Penty with 58 points. Only 21 points separate 4th to 12th with a second discard and 3 races there is all to play for on the last day for positions in the top 10.

Silver Fleet – Gribbins in the lead but still close

In the silver fleet a 1,4,4,4 leaves Luke and Ewan Gribbin with an 8 point advantage over new pairing Iain Bird and Anna Rowe who scored 2,2,3,13. Meanwhile a titanic batter remains in progress between Emma Tardrew and Rex Farrant who scored UFD,1,11,1 and George Tardrew and Henry White.

Crews' Race

After sailors feedback last year, a crews' race was run for the first time after the last race off the day and 30 boats competed. Dom Lewis and Patrick Croghan won this race with Billy Ozanne and Nick Robins in second.

Championship racing continues on Thursday with 3 races and a slightly delayed start to allow the older sailors the time to digest A level results. After sailing the customary Black Tie will follow for the prize giving and party.
