Spinlock, the award-winning designers and manufacturers of rope-holding equipment and personal safety products for water users, were delighted to lend their support to the first Hamble Classics Regatta over the weekend of the 24th and 25th September.

Saturday was Spinlock Race Day and saw up to 65 boats ranging from 20-foot gaffers to the mighty Swan 65 Desperado take part in one of the most inclusive shows of classic boats in the Solent.

Spinlock, based in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, also donated a generous selection of prizes for those taking part in the Spinlock Race Day. Aggregate winners of the ten racing classes received Spinlock accessories including their much prized kneepads. Spinlock also awarded Deckvest LITE lifejackets to the following yachts at the Regatta:

  • Best performance by a pre-1971 wooden yacht - X One-Design Class - Caprice - Hamish Calder
  • Best performance of the whole regatta fleet - IRC Class 1 - Whooper - Giovanni Belgrano
  • Seamanship Award - Jolie Brise
The Seamanship Award was presented to Jolie Brise's crew for preventing a major collision with a yacht that had broken its towline and was drifting at the beginning of the day. Jolie Brise ran aground on Hamble Spit on a falling tide and was stranded there for around six hours and missed their race. The boat's crew were considered worthy winners of The Seamanship Award for avoiding damage both to herself and the other yacht.

The Royal Southern Yacht Club hosted the event and the main organiser and classic boat owner, Jonty Sherwill said: "The event has been a great success and there has been an overwhelming demand from competitors for the event to be repeated. Many thanks to Spinlock for their support."

Chris Hill, CEO of Spinlock, added: "We are delighted that the first Spinlock Race at Hamble Classics Regatta was an overwhelming success. The range of classic boats taking part was impressive to see and we are pleased to have been involved in one of the many facets of the sport of sailing."
