Mirror Open at Overy Staithe Sailing Club

by Andy Turner 6 Sep 2016 13:01 BST 25 August 2016

The thunderstorms blew over and the sun came out on a beautiful force 2 north easterly for the nine boats in the annual Timmy Roy Trophy for Mirrors.

In race 1 Dave Cooper and Sid Smith were first to the windward mark, followed by Rachel Pyke and Iona Morley forsaking their Teras to sail a Mirror, and Camilla Warner crewed by Isabella Deakin. On the run Andrew Green and Henry Smith came through to take second place whilst Dave Cooper's mast punched a hole through the deck – too much rig tension or just rotten deck beams? So Rachel and Iona won the race with Andrew second and Camilla third.

In race 2 Dave Cooper just had time to move his mast on to the forward step and ignore the large hole in the foredeck. Again he was well up at the first mark but was sailing 10 degrees further off the wind than other competitors. Camilla came through on the second reach to take the lead from Rachel and Iona and just held on to finish first despite having to do a 360 penalty turn for hitting the last mark.

In race 3 Rachel and Iona had to carry out some emergency boat repairs as the jib fairlead and the mainsheet block on the transom had both come off in the previous races. However they again showed excellent starting and windward sailing to pass Dave and Sid and take the lead, never to let it go. Dave and Sid finished second in this race and Camilla and Isabella third.

Rachel and Iona were worthy winners and were presented with the trophy by Linda Roy, Timmy Roy's widow. Monday August 21st 2017 is the date for next year's Mirror open.
