On a simply sparkling West Solent, 11 boats were at the starting line for the 13th race in the Nordic Folkboat Saturday series. The fleet faced a moderate southwesterly breeze, which peaked at 21 knots, and an incoming tide.
No doubt with this in mind the committee set a long windward leg to Dunford which was rounded first by Tak followed closely by Bonnie and Padfoot both of the latter having over stood by a small margin in allowing too much for the strength of the tide.
Tak then proceeded to go trawling with her spinnaker on the down wind leg to Berthon but recovered sufficiently to maintain her lead which she in fact held all the way to the finish. After Berthon the fleet headed for Lymington Bank against an ever-increasing tide, which called for a well-judged lay line to the mark.
The course then went over to the Island shore with a spinnaker reach to Wadworths and a return via Solent Bank and Baker Marine to the finish. Bonnie and Padfoot managed to claw back a bit of Tak's lead on the downwind leg, but Tak held onto a comfortable lead whilst Bonnie and Padfoot slogged it out for second and third respectively, finishing within matter of seconds of each other. Scaramouche and Samphire, followed the first three across the line to take fourth and fifth.
