I am Team GB Day at Ullswater Yacht Club on August 27

by Sue Giles 16 Aug 2016 14:59 BST 27 August 2016

Ullswater Yacht Club is taking part in 'the nation's biggest ever sports day' on Saturday, August 27, and is delighted to have been chosen to host the Flagship ITV/Border regional event.

The I Am Team GB Day is promoted by ITV and the National Lottery as a celebration of the Olympics and to encourage everyone in the country to take part in a sporting activity.

The club's Ullswater Sailing School is running free sailing taster sessions from 10am-3pm with special sessions for disabled visitors as well as other I am Team GB watersports activities. A range of other sports will also be taking place all day on the club site from 10am-4pm.

UYC is thrilled to have been selected to host the Flagship event, one of 14 taking place all over the country on August 27 and ITV cameras will be at the club all day filming the activities. It is the only Flagship event in the North-west and the only sailing venue across the country.

As part of the day, RYA Sailability, which supports people with disability to take up the sport, have arranged for two fully accessible dinghies and a mobile hoist to be available for use. This will enable anybody, regardless of their ability, an opportunity to sail, showing that sailing is a totally inclusive sport. Staff from RYA Sailability will be present to support the event and provide information and advice on the day.

The taster sessions are completely free and there will be lots of I Am Team GB goodies on offer. The club will provide buoyancy aids and helmets - all you need is warm clothing, waterproofs and shoes you don't mind getting wet. The sessions are for all, from eight to 80+, or younger with parents or guardians, and family groups are welcome.

To encourage people to get active, ITV will also be switching off their transmission for an hour across all channels to get the nation to get moving. At 9.30am on 27 August, the big switch off will see ITV's seven channels come off air for an hour to encourage the great British public to get up and out and involved in sport at one of the many events happening across the country.

The event is taking place in conjunction with the British Olympic Association (BOA), UK Sport and is supported by Join In. It is essential to pre-book with the club for a free taster session on August 27. Contact 07900 855 812, email or visit www.ullswateryachtclub.org for more details. Participants must also register with the national website, iamteamgb.com/hero-event/ullswater-yacht-club-says-i-am-team-gb
