Topper UK National Championship at East Lothian Yacht Club - Overall

As forecast, Friday brought strong winds. The Race Officer and Committee Boats took up station, and the flotilla of RIBs took up their duties, but it was clear that with winds gusting over 30 knots, it was not practical or safe to release the fleet to race. Therefore, reluctantly the Race Officer cancelled all sailing for the day, and brought the sailing competition to a conclusion.

The competitors and supporters packed up their boats, the Committee Boats returned to harbour and the RIBs were brought ashore. The Prizegiving was held in the early afternoon with winners:

• Gold Fleet: Samuel Cooper from West Lancashire Yacht Club
• Silver Fleet: Sophie Kirk from Stokes Bay Sailing Club
• Topper 4.2 Championship: William Hudson from Newhaven & Seaford
• Regatta Fleet: Anna Miller from Annandale Sailing Club.

"The Topper Nationals at East Lothian Yacht Club have certainly been memorable. The weather did not smile upon us, with extremes at both ends of the wind speed spectrum. Opportunities to set races safely and fairly were limited and the race committee did well to achieve the number of races that they did.

"Nevertheless, the 225 competitors and their families have enjoyed the warm welcome in the beautiful town of North Berwick and its surrounding area. This has been a fantastic opportunity for our local sailors to experience National level competition and the huge efforts put in by ELYC club and Topper class volunteers has allowed everyone to get the most out of a testing week. I would like to congratulate all the young sailors who performed and competed so well. We look forward to welcoming the Topper competitors back in their future sailing careers."
