Osprey National Championship at Mumbles Yacht Club - Day 1

by Alan Henderson, Osprey Class Association 11 Aug 2016 23:06 BST 11-14 August 2016

35 teams have come to the Osprey Nationals, sponsored by Hartley Boats, at Mumbles YC for a first day's racing on 11 August.

It was the 15th time the Osprey class had picked Wales to host a Nationals, and it was a Welsh team, from nearby Tata SC, which ended the day on top. DJ Edwards and Adam Bowers took two second places to lead. They did not have it all their own way, with race wins going to other teams.

In the first race, Terry Curtis and Peter Greig led to the windward mark, while Mick Greenland and Lee Marriott showed the potential of the brand new Mark V Ospreys by lying second at the windward mark. In 16 knots of breeze, Curtis and Greig took the race, with Edwards second and Piers Strong/ Phil Angrave in third.

The breeze dropped to around 12 knots for the second race, and Martin Cooney/ Peter Frith carved out a huge lead by the windward mark, going on to win. But Edwards stayed in touch with a second place, with Strong/ Angrave in third.

The Osprey Class are grateful to the following sponsors of the 2016 Osprey National Championships; Hartley Boats, Allen Brothers, Seasure, Clamcleat and Rain & Sun Covers.

For further information about the class, see www.ospreysailing.org, or the Sail Osprey Facebook page.
