Magic Marine RS200 National Circuit at Parkstone Yacht Club

by Dicken Maclean 20 Jul 2016 20:08 BST 16-17 July 2016

With hot weather and close racing on offer, 38 RS200s made the trip to the ever welcoming Parkstone YC for the Magic Marine National Circuit event.

Day 1 did not disappoint, starting with unbroken sunshine, 10 knots and the prospect of a sea breeze.

In Race 1 with the tide taking boats over the line, it took a number of general recalls and black flags to get away meaning some had to sit Race 1. Matt Mee and Emma Norris made good of the shifty conditions to take the win over locals Karen Oldale and Jo Allam.

With the sea breeze kicking in for Race 2, Ed Whitehead and Lucy Mac led from the start and never looked back to take a convincing win over Matt and Emma.

Race 3 saw slightly lighter conditions where Mark Heather and Jo Hewitson took advantage of the absence of Matt and Emma to take the win over Nick Charles and Emma Hivey.

The fleet headed in to a reception of beer and cake kindly provided by the home fleet.

Day 2 dawned and a very glassy Poole harbour did not look promising, but with the tide turning mid morning, the race officer sent a very unconvinced fleet out citing 'nobody will make it if we wait and they have to fight a foul tide'

After some pumping, towing and swimming by some the fleet made it to the race course. Race 1 started in a very fickle south easterly, which promptly shifted 45 degrees right and shut off forcing an abandonment, and concerns around the fleet that this was a sign of a frustrating day ahead. However the wind held relatively constant to allow the race committee to complete three short races.

Matt and Emma showed great speed and consistence in shifty conditions to race up 1,2,1, with only Tim Saxton and Holly Scott winning race 2 getting in the way of a perfect scoreline.

Matt and Emma took a convincing victory overall, over a very consistent Nick Charles and Emma Hivey with Tim Saxton and Holly Scott rounding off the podium.

Big thank you should go to Parkstone Yacht Club for arranging great weather, beer and cake, and great credit to the race officer for completing the series.
