Flying Fifteen and GP14 Open Meeting at Bassenthwaite Sailing Club

by Mik Chappell 11 Jul 2016 18:32 BST 9-10 July 2016

It was an extremely windy weekend. But despite this there were fleets of thirteen boats in each of the Flying Fifteen and GP14 Open Events which were being run in parallel on Bassenthwaite Lake. This event was part of the Waples Wine Flying Fifteen Northern Traveller Series.

Saturday was the heavier of the two days with only two of the three scheduled races completed before boats in both fleets were flattened and racing was abandoned for the day.

In the Fifteens Simon Longstaff / Jon Denwood from the Home Club took wins in both races with Dave McKee / Mal Hartland from Dovestone SC and Nigel / Gavin Tullet from Royal Windermere YC taking second place in the respective races.

Mark Somerville / Phil Hodgkins from Bass won both the GP races with club mates Mike Fairlamb / Eric Smith second in Race 1 and Jean-Louis Simons / Mark Hinton from West Kirby SC securing second in Race 2.

Sunday was, initially, slightly less gusty enabling racing to get underway. However, the gybe mark became particularly exposed. There were a significant number of capsizes amongst the GPs especially at that point in the course.

In the Fifteens McKee / Hartland took two wins before lunch with John Hanson / Helen Selden from Datchet SC and Longstaff / Denwood taking seconds. So, with one discard, the overall result would be decided on the final race. The Bass crew encountered spinnaker problems giving the win to the Dovestone boat with Longstaff / Denwood taking second in the series one point ahead of RWYC's entry.

With a second and a first to add to their two wins on Saturday, Somerville / Hodgkins were in an unassailable position and took the GP Series without the need to contest the final race.

Simons / Hinton counted a second plus a first to take second overall ahead of Fairlamb / Smith. The Southport SC boats of Greg Thomas / Joel James and Ben Swainson / Poppy James took one win and one second place respectively.
