Dates and Key Speaker Announced for Shipwrights' Lectures 2016

by Worshipful Company of Shipwrights 10 Jul 2016 12:21 BST 19 October 2016

The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights, with the support of the University of Southampton, arrange a series of annual lectures to be presented to apprentices, young shipwrights, students and graduates by invited industry leaders.

The purpose being to inspire and motivate young people engaged in the UK's £3 billion unique international position in the super yacht, yacht and boat design and building industry. The annual lectures are held at the University of Southampton in October each year and are free to all attendees.

This year the panel discussion will cover 'Construction Materials' and again be chaired by Matthew Sheahan with contributors soon to be named. To follow on from a marvellous talk from Henk Weikens last year on his experiences as an apprentice, founding Pendennis Shipyard and their challenging apprentice training programme we will be hearing, this year, from two of the apprentices themselves!

The key speaker is the internationally known yachtswoman and restoration exponent, Elizabeth Meyer, who restored the J Class Yachts Endeavour and Shamrock V along with many others as well as founding the International School of Yacht Restoration which has trained hundreds of students in classic yacht build and restoration skills. The closing speaker will be announced in the coming months.

This year’s Shipwrights' Lectures will be held at the Turner Sims Concert Hall, University of Southampton on October 19th at 1430.

Lectures are free to attend for any Boat Building or Marine Engineering Apprentices (this includes marine electrical & electronic, marine painters/finishers and welder fabricator apprentices) and their employers. We do also open up availability to students studying related marine engineering degrees such as Ship Science at the University of Southampton and Yacht Design at Southampton Solent. All that is required is that they register online before the event as we do have a limited capacity.
