Island Sailing Club Evening Race Series - Day 7

by Peter Dickson, Principal Race Officer 1 Jun 2016 11:20 BST 31 May 2016

The forecast for Tuesday Evening 31st May was unfavourable with winds gusting to 30 knots from the North.

Actual conditions having initially looked promising deteriorated by 17:30 with heavy rain and poor visibility adding to the 20 to 25 knot wind to make unpleasant conditions in the harbour. The decision was taken to cancel all racing except for the Fast Handicap Cruisers in Class 1.

As it happened only 7 yachts came to the line but they were rewarded with an excellent race. The course took the yachts to the East to Destination Cowes with 2 beats and 2 runs across the Solent with spinnakers flying on the downwind legs as the wind moderated and the visibility improved. All yachts were home by 2000hrs having made the best of the unpromising conditions. Those who had been cancelled seemed happy to have been able to spend this particular evening ashore!
