Cadet Open at Frensham Pond Sailing Club

by Jim Morley 2 May 2016 15:42 BST 23 April 2016

Frensham's open event for Cadet dinghies is an important day in the club calendar and also for its record in local sport. Frensham has a World-wide reputation as the "nursery of champions". The club's youth training has produced: World, European and National champions as well as Olympic helms. The latest of these: Andrea Brewster has just been selected to sail at Rio for Ireland. Others include former Olympic helm Cathy Foster and multi champion Nick Craig who is one of Farnham's honoured sportsmen.

All these began their sporting careers with the Frensham youth training and sailing Cadets. The Cadet is a sixty-year-old design but it is still the ideal two person dinghy for youngsters aged between eight-years old and sixteen. The boat has everything in miniature that can be seen in larger adult designs.

On Saturday May 23rd twenty six entries took part in the open event many having travelled some distance.

Furthest travelled was a team for the Cheshire Wirral and West Kirby SC. Also two generations of the Frensham Bullmore family were taking part; one crew in a boat built by Steve Bullmore a long term Frensham veteran.

On the Saturday there were clear skies but a cold north easterly breeze that provided good competitive racing.

The standard was once again high among the twenty six entries and there was good close quarter action and few capsizes.

Four races in total were sailed; two morning and two after lunch. The competition soon developed into a battle between three local crews who put their knowledge of this water to good use.

Club Commodore Colin Dutton presided at the prizegiving and thanked race officer Bruce Hill for setting suitably challenging courses. He also praised Class captain: Steph Videlo and her team for all their work with the club's youth and for this open meeting. Special prizes went to furthest travelled crew: James & George Colquitt from West Kirby – Under 14 crew: Finbarr Wormwell & Oscar Ferenczy - Frensham.

Overall Results:

1st True Colours, Issie & Emily Speirs (Frensham)
2nd (and special prize for all girl crew) What's it called, Anna Morgan & Jemima Hill (Frensham)
3rd Aelous, Megan Ferguson & Yasmin Sfaxi (Frensham)
4th (1st visitor): Two Can, Jamie Harris & Toni Wilkinson (Bristol/Waldringfield)
5th Lethal Menace, Finbarr Wormwell & Oscar Ferenczy (Frensham)
