Solo Nation's Cup at Medemblik, Holland - Day 3 Preview

22-24 April 2016
The day dawned cold and windy, the sun's rays providing just enough encouragement 'to suit up' for the final two races of the championship. I walked around the dinghy park, small groups of sailors huddled together and discussed tactics, technique and other meaning of life topics.
At this point I need to clarify some points I made in my day 2 report. Firstly and most importantly, there is only one discard for the eight races to be sailed. If I had been a competitor I would have read the SI's but as media boat, I had not concerned myself with such trivial matters.
Andy Davis leads and will have to finish fourth or better if Matt Howard wins both races today. He looked and felt a bit rough, so all is not lost in the Howard camp. Mike Sims in third needs an awesome day and another Howard swim to improve but with a predicted 20+ knots on the course, has a chance. Martin Frary has a 2 point lead on Pete Mitchell and they are both 8 clear of Dave Mitchell.
Other possible improvers include Guy Mayger, the Ijsselmeer chop suiting the south coast sailor's style, Jonathan Swain, who is unfortunately unable to dump the 22nd he incurred in race 2 and Ian Hopwood.
This Championship is not over and as the storm clouds approach and snow begins to fall, and with 45 minutes until zero, the only thing certain is drama... unless racing is cancelled!
