POSH at Paignton Sailing Club - Preview

by Arthur Phillips 20 Apr 2016 21:10 BST 7-8 May 2016

Now in its 5th year, POSH, one of Paignton Sailing Club's two annual flagship events is taking place on Sat/Sun 7th/8th May. Despite its rather ostentatious name POSH, standing for Paignton Open for Single Handers, has nothing to do with smoking your pipe while perched nonchalantly on the gunwale of your ketch or clipper! It is a full on, no holds barred battle of mono-hull single handers with a PY of 1200 down to how high performance would you like sir?!

Being the only BIG single hander event in the south-west, since it's inception it has attracted a variety of fast classes: Contenders, Lasers, Musto Skiffs, Phantoms, Blazes, D-Ones, RS600s, and RS100s, whereby a number of these classes have made it one of their circuit events, and brought some crack helms along too! This year we also have a bunch of International Canoes, Foiling Moths and a Farr 3.7 coming along.

Paignton Sailing Club is located in Paignton Harbour on the shores of the sheltered yet challenging waters of beautiful Torbay (the scenery can be very distracting!). Boats can launch at any state of the tide and the winds are generally off the land and not excessive, only steady easterlies generate big waves and add that extra dimension to the sailing.

We are also renowned for hosting large regattas including Laser World Qualifiers, Topper National Championships, RS100, Scorpion and Enterprise Nationals and last year the Musto Skiffs and Supernovas entrusted us with their Nationals. This year we are hosting our first 18ft Skiff open.

The POSH regatta takes place over two days, with three races scheduled each day. There is an reduced entry fee if you register early (payment on the day only), and included in every entry is a meal for the competitors at the Saturday night reception, which is a perfect time to catch up on the days racing and check out the results. There is easy access to the club with free parking within a few minutes walk and ample reasonably priced accommodation. This year we are capping the entries to 70, and we already have 56 entries signed up! So if you have a single handed dinghy and fancy taking part in this prestigious event then PRE-ENTER NOW to save disappointment: www.paigntonsailingclub.com/POSH/Entry_Form.php

We look forward to seeing you there and if you have any problems or queries please email us at

PS You could also bring the family down and let them enjoy the multifarious attractions of one of the countries top holiday destinations, the English Riviera, with its wonderful scenery and beaches and UNESCO-recognised Global Geopark, while you indulge yourself slugging it out for the various trophies.
