Rooster Midland Solo Series at Banbury Sailing Club

by Duncan Syme 6 Apr 2016 06:54 BST 2 April 2016

Twenty Four Solos took part in the first round of the Rooster Midland Solo Series at Banbury Sailing Club on Saturday 2nd April. The Southerly wind was perfect for the lake and provided a fresh breeze up the middle of the courses.

Race 1 set off in 15kts breeze under overcast skies. A three leg (beat, shy reach, beat) took the fleet to the top of the lake and then a long, deep run saw the full width of the lake used as the sailors sought the stronger, cleaner air. A couple of sailors fell foul of the SI's and were disqualified for not passing through the start / finish line each lap (always read them....) and after four laps, the end of race honours went to Chris Brown.

Following Lunch, the fleet set off for two back to back races on a variation of the first course, to match the slightly shifted wind direction. The weather was by now bright sunshine and the wind had freshened slightly making for near perfect sailing condition (if not a little hot for the clothing needed for April sailing....). Chris Brown also took the second race and event, but it wasn't plain sailing for him in the 3rd race, which was won by Ian Hopwood.

Overall winner on the day was Chris Brown, followed by Ian Hopwood and then Nigel Davies in 3rd. Once again Banbury Sailing Club hosted a memorable opening event of the Rooster Midland Series and served as a shake down race ahead of the Solo Spring Championships at Draycote on the 9th April. The next Rooster Midland Event will be held at Hollowell Sailing Club on 16th April.

Overrall Results:

1st 5643, Chris Brown (Draycote Water SC)
2nd 5645, Ian Hopwood (Nantwich SC)
3rd 5642, Nigel Davies (Draycote Water SC)
