GP14 World Championship in Barbados - Day 2

by Michelle Evans 30 Mar 2016 15:55 BST 26 March - 4 April 2016

After yesterday's sluggish start to launching all of the sailors had boats rigged and ready go early yesterday. With another day of sunshine and lower waves on entry the fleet were away and on the start on time.

The first start of the day (Race 2) was abandoned due to either the motor on the outboard failing or the pathfinder setting off too soon depending on who you spoke to. The wind strength was variable throughout the day with the first beat challenging. The first reach was survival mode even for gold fleet with Andy Hately and Ben Pickering capsizing from second place. For those not flying the spinnaker you could still plane down the reach just on the gib.

Between the spray and capsizes there were a lot of soggy sailors by the end of the race with Dobson/Tunnicliffe winning out followed by Craig/Lewis in second and McCarthy/Davies third.

Sam Watson who had such a good day the day before managed to leave the bung out but still managed to finish 15th in the second race before the slowly sinking boat crossed in 25th for the third race. With the wind dropping Race 3 was a more tactical affair with the shifts on the beat once again proving vital and giving us our third different winner in as many races in Instone/Toothill.

Bajan sailors Jason Tindale and Robert Povey found their feet in the fleet and managed to put in a 10th and 17th which, given their 3 weeks of GP14 sailing is impressive.

Landing at the end of the day was far easier in the lighter waves and all boats managed to stay intact. With the discard coming into play after tomorrow's racing it will be really interesting to see what the top ten looks like and it's definitely shaping up to be a cracking championship!
