12-14 February 2016
They were impatient to get out and were not disappointed. The 300 sailors competing in three new one-design classes for the second weekend of the 32nd Primo Cup – Trophée Credit Suisse had their work cut out, with the 73 boats representing nine nations off to a flying start.
With a building westerly 20-knot wind and big sea, it was an amazing spectacle. Starting with the Diam 24od one-design catamarans, conditions were ideal for these mean racing machines on a course set close to the shore. Screaming along on one hull, the crew literally jumping from side to the other in the tacks, these super-powerful boats were planing along to the delight of the public. No need to be a connoisseur to appreciate the beauty of these machines that have been the official boat of the Tour de France à la Voile since 2015. Among the teams, was Monegasque and Yacht Club Vice-President, Pierre Casiraghi sailing with Gwen Riou, his team-mate on the VOR70 Maserati.
J/70: masters on home ground
The conditions were also much appreciated by the J/70 teams. Sixteen of the 45 boats are from Monaco and without a doubt all were the most eager to do battle with two general recalls on the counter. This evening, the Yacht Club de Monaco flagged boats are well represented in the upper echelons of the ranking, with Jacopo Carrain (Carpe Diem), J/70 Monaco Class Association Monaco top of the leader-board in the provisional overall ranking, followed by the Russian Mark Kaganskiy (Yanis). Even the 13 teams from the East, 11 Germans, five Swiss and a boat from the Manhattan Yacht Club were not able to upset the Monegasque domination with YCM member Stefano Roberti currently lying 3rd.
Melges 20: out for revenge
And lastly the Melges 20, third class competing this weekend, were out in the thick of it. At the end of one very lively race, three Russian teams are in the top four. But local Guido Miani, one of the world’s best in this class, currently lying 5th this evening, has not had his last word and will be giving it his all tomorrow, Sunday, for the grand finale. One thing’s for sure, the show must go on!
Enjoy the show!
As always the public are more than welcome to watch the show. Races can be seen from various observation points in the Principality including the Luciana Jetty near the Yacht Club, the esplanades and slopes of the main harbour wall, Fort Antoine, terrace of the Oceanographic Museum and Casino Gardens.
