2015 Setley Cup and Seahorse Trophy

by Stuart Jardine, PRO 26 Dec 2015 17:46 GMT 26 December 2015

The Setley Cup and Seahorse Trophy for model yachts without any outside assistance is held annually at Setley Pond Setley Pond near Lymington on Boxing Day morning. 24 Monohulls and 23 Multihulls started. Children must be under 16 to launch them.

The weather forecast was right; it was windy, averaging 26 knots from the Southwest and gusts well into the thirties. Five races were completed despite the carnage in the gusts. Ashore it appeared that the monohulls were doing better, probably because many could recover from the gusts. Nevertheless, the actual results were much closer, only 5 of the monohulls completed 4 out of 5 races and the multihulls did slightly better with 7 completing 4 races.

The multitude of spectators enjoyed the excitement in all 5 races and particularly some of the lighter catamarans rolling head over heels down the pond.

The monohulls were dominated this year by Annabel Hutchinson winning all her races with Skittle Boat.

Monohull Results: (for the Setley Cup)

1st Annabel Hutchinson – Skittle Boat - 4pts
2nd Barnaby Mortimer – Red 44 - 10pts
3rd Maisie Hutchinson – Mad Madame Min – 12pts
4th Robby Mayo - Robbie's Rocket - 19pts
5th Jack Coster - Sea Too - 28pts

The multihulls produced a very close finish with Finn Gabriel winning by one point from Emma Bennett.

Multihull Results: (for the Seahorse Trophy)

1st Finn Gabriel - Maxicat - 7pts
2nd Emma Bennet - Tiger - 8pts
3rd Richard Mason – Red Sail - 13pts
4th Molly Lloyd - Bubba - 25pts
5th Fendley B – K - Gale Rider – 26pts
6th Calum Morris - Striker - 27pts
7th Matthew Gill - Unnamed V – 28pts

We were fortunate this year to have Andrew Hurst, editor of Seahorse magazine) who presented the Seahorse Trophy first back in 1998 to present the trophy this year to Finn.

Our thanks again go to our many helpers; Jane Pitt-Pitts on results and Ann Brunskill leading the finishing on one bank, all the photographs and Adrian Jardine leading the finishers on the opposite bank.
