A total of forty two yachts came to the start line for the second of the Lymington Town Sailing Club's Solent Circuit, autumn keelboat series on Sunday 18th October. The days racing was sponsored by Caldwells Estate Agents.
The weather was overcast and the wind light and shifty from the north. After a short postponement, Class One, for IRC rated yachts, got underway, with Ray Mitchell's new Swan 45, Checkmate, setting the early pace and leading the fleet at the Rathbones moveable windward mark.
Class One and Two sailed the same 11 nautical mile course, taking in leeward marks on the island shore, including the Caldwells buoy.
Checkmate took line honours, but was overhauled on handicap by Ray Crouch's Adams 10, Boomerang in first place and Peter Schofields HoD 35 Zarafa in second. Third and fourth placed J105's Jin Tonic, Andrew Roberts and Jelly Baby, William Newton were separated by just one second on corrected time, with Roberts taking the bottle prize.
Bob and Jon Bakers J97 Jaywalker won Class Two, followed by Allan Hills Colleen and Oliver Dunne, sailing his Scampi, Minim. The remaining four fleets enjoyed three rounds of a shorter, inshore course, off the Pylewell foreshore.
The J80s and RS Elite fleets had some extremely tight racing on a windward-leeward course, where downwind tactics proved key to success although there where numerous place changes in all classes.
There was some dramatic racing in the RS Elite fleet, with Martin Wadhams and Kiss taking the race win despite trailing Steve Powell on E'tu for two laps.
Race three in the series is scheduled to continue Racing continues on Sunday 23rd October. Late entries are welcome, contact the LTSC Sailing Office for details or see the www.ltsc.co.uk website.
