ACO Musto Skiff World Championship at Fraglia Vela Riva - Day 2

by Rick Perkins 16 Sep 2015 21:05 BST 11-19 September 2015

Sailors at the ACO 6th Musto Performance Skiff World Championships opened their curtains as the church bells chimed to a view of rain and no wind... it didn't look good.

However only one thing is for certain in Riva and that is the weather can change in a very short time.

Today the sailors enjoyed 3 races held in an 8 to 14 knot northerly breeze.

The reversal of wind direction and the slightly lighter breezes from the first day gave the sailors a new challenge that suited some and no so others.

After a general recall the first race of the day got off in 14 knots of breeze and the sailors split with the bulk of the fleet heading left and the rest working the middle and a few taking a chance on the right.

At the end of the first lap Paul Dijkstra (NED) was leding chased hard by Andi Lachenschmid, (GER) and Jon Newman (AUS). The leading pack again backed the left middle looking for the extra wind where possible.

After another lap Newman (AUS) had pulled through for the win from Dijkstra (NED) and Lachenschmid, (GER).

The 5th race started in 11 knots; again left was favourite but there were certainly gains to be made in all sides of the race course with many place changes taking place at busy mark roundings.

At the end of the first lap Dan Trotter (GBR) had a good led from Newman (AUS) and Thor Schoenhoff (AUS). These sailors then led the fleet up the left middle of the beat in softening breeze that moderated to 8 knots.

At the finish Dan Trotter (GBR) had held on for the win from Keen(GBR) who had pulled through well with Newman (AUS) in 3rd.

For the final race of the day the wind had built back to 12 knots and the fleet got away first time with an individual recall.

Trotter (GBR) had now really found top gear and led the fleet again at the end of the first lap chased hard by Zieher (AUT) and Peile (AUS).

As the second lap progressed the wind moderated to 8 knots but Trotter (GBR) continued to extend with Keen (GBR) again pulling through to second with Schoenhoff (AUS) pulling through to 3rd.

As the fleet worked their way back in the wind began to shut down as sailors crept back into Riva.

The race team did a fantastic job of fitting in 3 races in the time that the North wind was viable for racing; it is clear that having a highly experienced race team with excellent local knowledge if key to keeping a championships regatta on track. Thanks to Giorgio Battinelli and his team for their great work today.

Sailors, friends, family, race team and helpers are now assembling for a pasta party which will be followed by a gala dinner... and a lay day so perhaps it will be a big night out for the fleet.
