5.3 Winners Morgan Archer, Elliott Kuzyk and Calum Bell at the Topper National Series Event 1 at Rutland SC © Andre Ozanne

Sun, wind, new sailors, old sailors, prizes, tasty food, friendly parents, jokes over the PA system what else do you need for a great weekend! Fierce Competition that's what the 4.2 fleet and 5.3s fleet provided.

With 140 sailors in the 5.3s and 40 in the 4.2s they created a healthy start to the series. It is very pleasing to see lots of new faces in the 4.2s and some moving up to the 5.3s along with more new sailors, always sad not see some of the older faces that have flown to '9ers, Lasers, 420s etc. We wish them well on their next adventure.

The class is very pleased to have GJW Direct Insurance, Sailing Solutions by Rooster and Magic Marine sponsoring respective fleets for the coming season. Their support is appreciated by the class, sailors and parents.

So racing got under way on time with a leisurely 11.25 start on the Saturday morning after an extra briefing for the new 4.2 sailors Andy the PRO giving many words of guidance on flags and start procedures, also briefing that a support rib would provide guidance for those new to big events. If your sailor is contemplating taking the step from club racing to a National Series it's a great way to introduce them to larger fleet size sailing the rib guidance can really give reassurance and the girls and boys in the 4.2 are a really friendly bunch.

Northerly winds medium and gusty but reasonably steady meant the 5.3s got there 6 races in up near the dam in good time without too many disruptions. Over night Elliot Kuzyk stood at the top of the results with plenty of his competitors ready to pounce.

4.2 were sent off west of the club and had more variation in wind strengths and direction with the wind coming over the 'island' the PRO put in 2 trapezoid races before heading back to shore for lunch. Lots of chatter on shore over the hot chocolates and sandwiches about 'why did he get there',and did you see her nearly capsize etc a great bit of banter and so very useful for the sailors to build their friendships. Out for another 3 races and quite a late return, Happy but tired sailors ready for some hot food a bit of kick the ball around and bed, even the parents may have had a beer.

Sunday broke for many of the families camping as a bright day with lighter winds than the previous day. Racing starting an hour earlier, the efficient team of launchers and the jelly baby lady handing out here wares kept the early morning proceedings fun. With lighter winds coming from the WNW both fleets were sent to their race areas. Today they had an armada of 12 ft fishing vessel two up spending the day on an Anglian Water fishing competition, also the club racing and some leisurely cruisers to interact with.

Overnight in the 4.2s George Vincent Parkstone YC held the lead closely followed by James Deaton, today life at the top was just as pressurised and race wins were shared amongst a number of boats some big shifts and pressure difference kept everyone thinking hard. The PRO stopped racing for lunch on the water and sailors tied up to ribs and ate on board from a distance it looked like a mad Topper hatters tea party. Andy decided to turn the trapezoid into a windward leeward for the remainder of the day and this provided more close racing with some unexpected guests, the club races windward mark was up wind of the 4.2s course and so a fleet of A Class, Sprint 15s, Flying Fifteens, a Moth and an assortment of others joined the fleet for a while the leeward gate was fun. James worked hard gaining by getting more on the inside of the shifts than anyone else with George coming in second and Oscar Shaw Parkstone third. At the back of the fleet full marks to Ross Butcher Hykeham SC for sticking at it and scoring in all 10 races well done.

5.3s were in relatively clear air but very light and races got away smoothly. Kieran Moore Chew Valley SC took a bullet along with Euan Harris Debden SC in the other flight; this shook up the fleet. Morgan Archer Blue Circle SC then fired in two very good results along with Toby Cope Rudyard Lake SC winning the final race of the day. If you were good at maths you may have been able to work it out in your head but between Calum Bell Helensburgh SC, Elliott and Morgan it was all very hard to work out. Once the scores had been computed Morgan Archer squeezed Elliot out by one point! Fierce Competition! With the 2015 series winner, the national champion and the inland champion all won by girls Rutland was the return of the boys. Congratulations to Harriet Lee Yorkshire Dales first girl along with Rachel Mccluskey Liegh and Lowton SC 2nd and Coco Barret Queen Mary 3rd.

There are many area events still on the calendar listed on the home page http://www.gbrtopper.co.uk/news.php there is now a long break to the Winter Regatta NS2 at WPNSA time for some local racing and some chilly squad training.
