Players of People's Postcode Lottery made it possible for thirty-five young people to join the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust's 'Return to Sail' trip at the Essex Outdoor Centre in Bradwell from 10-14 August.

The inspirational five-day adventure held at the coastal outdoor education centre included sailing, canoeing, high ropes, cycling, archery and power kiting. As part of the Trust's 'Return to Sail' programme, the trip is aimed at building long term relationships with the young people in recovery from cancer who sail with the Trust.

Brenda Duncan, the mother of Noah who has recently joined a Trust trip for the third year, explained the impact of the 'Return to Sail' programme: "Noah had, as always, a truly amazing time. He starts secondary school in two weeks and it's all a bit daunting for us. I know for sure that this has boosted his confidence greatly and hopefully will help with the big transition."

Brenda continued, "Noah may have gained new sailing skills, but this time round, he gained much more at a time when he needed it the most. The Trust creates confidence-building opportunities for kids like Noah. The results of the Trust's hard work are always noticeable and we've so far been able to sense a real progression on many levels: independence, leadership, skills, social interaction, maturity."

The Trust's long-term commitment to its young people is a value shared by players of People's Postcode Lottery who believe in establishing partnerships with the charities they work with. Having been a key supporter for over four years, players of People's Postcode Lottery are integral to the Trust's ability to offer Return to Sail trips, plan for the future and support the young people for as long as required.

This year, players of People's Postcode Lottery generously contributed £200,000, enabling the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust to run ten 'Return to Sail' trips and invite over 250 young people to continue their sailing experience.

Launched in 2003, the aim of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is to give young people in recovery from cancer the chance to rebuild their confidence through sailing. In its 12th year, the Trust has grown beyond every expectation into a national charity. Working with every young person Principal Treatment Centre and a growing number of Designated Units in the UK. Taking young people aged between 8-24 who are recovering from cancer on four-day sailing trips.

The Trust invites young people between the ages of 8-17 back each year for various 'Return to Sail' activities. Those over 18 years of age are invited back once, before being given the opportunity to become 'Graduate Volunteers' with the Trust. The 'Return to Sail' programme builds relationships, strengthens friendships and develops a sense of community.
