Mirror National Championship at Abersoch - Day 4

by Robert Bellfield 21 Aug 2015 09:21 BST 15-21 August 2015

Four races as the Race Officer plays catch up

After the frustrations of 'Windy Wednesday' the Mirror Fleet had a long day on the water to catch up with the programme. A steady Southerly 10 to 15 kts breeze, in warm but largely overcast conditions, was ideal to crack in 4 quick races to claw back those missed earlier in the week.

Two clear favourites emerged from the day's racing with Dave & Imogen Wade (Northampton SC) and Eleanor Keers & Izzy Pugh (Itchenor SC) both achieving two race wins, leaving them currently 19 points clear of the third boat of Angus and Florence Hemmings (Stokes Bay SC). The black flag was used for races 7 & 8 which caught out some of the front runners. Chris and Katy Jenkins (Bowmoor SC) had a really good day with three top ten results but a Being a touch early on one start spoilt what could have been even better. Henry and Jamie Rastrick (Ripon SC), who are also often seen sailing Teras, have also come back into the reckoning with a 2nd in the final race of the day. Special mention of the day is for Brenden May of Mounts Bay SC who is crewing for his dad Denzil aged 4. Together they achieved a 5th in Race 7 - what an achievement!

The day finished off with a combined race from both Mirror Nationals and Mirror Week competitors. After a long day only 30 boats took part but a fast and furious race around the inshore circuit saw victory for Alex and James Colquitt (West Kirby SC) - Cadet National Junior Squad sailors who have borrowed an Australian Mirror called 'Vegemite Sandwich' - a long story!

Finally - the day also had the appearance of the BBC's 'One Show' with the presenter Andy Kershaw out on the water in a Mirror. The filming aimed to showcase the Mirror's role in contributing to the growth of affordable dinghy sailing. No better example than the 86 boats on the waters off Abersoch - of all shapes and ages!

Four races are planned for the final day, before the long journey home. There will be some tired sailors both in the back and front of the car. For many it is straight off to the 420 National Championships at Restronguet starting on Sunday.
