Supernova National Championship at Paignton Sailing Club - Overall

by Alex Collins 29 Jun 2015 07:27 BST 19-21 June 2015
Supernova National Championship competitors © Caz Hand

How did the runners and riders get on?

  • Cliff Milliner, 1st - It was clear that Cliff was on form from day 1. The already two-time National champion put together a consistent set of results that would ultimately see him win this year's event. 2 wins were his in the series with many 2nd and 3rd places on his scoreline.

  • Mike Gibson, 2nd - Mike proved once again that he was Mr consistent by being the only entrant to count top 10 positions in all of the 10 races. Gibson sailed an incredible serious and finished runner up to Milliner by the smallest of margins, 2 points. Gibson also finished top master at the event against tough competition.

  • Tim Hand, 3rd - Tim sailed superbly well to record his best ever nationals result. Winning the opening race of the event meant that Hand was a contender from day 1 and he certainly proved to be consistent being able to be right at the front in all of the conditions.

  • Iain Horlock, 4th - Still relatively new to the fleet, Iain impressed at his first Supernova nationals by coming 4th ahead of stiff competition. Being the tallest competitor, Iain used his height to his advantage in the heavy winds but also had great speed when the conditions got light. Being a member at Exe, his time spent on the waves helped him out.

  • Gavin Young, 5th - Young has always been a very fast sailor, so fast that he has been Milliners training partner for a number of years. Gavin was the winner of the last race of the series and generally had good top 10 results.

  • Tony Critchley, 6th - Tony won the 5th race of the series and also had two 2nd places. Critchley was very fast throughout the series, leading a number of races before losing out due to the conditions. Saying that, in the last race of the series he gained 10+ places on the run and the beat up to the finish so the speed and determination was always there.

  • Richard Pakes, 7th - Richard was another of the events race winners, winning race 8. Finishing only 1 point behind Tony Critchley, Richard had a decent set of results and looked threatening to more race victories at certain points in the event.

  • Alex Collins, 9th - It was disappointment for Collins at this years Nationals. Having previously won 4 opens this year and coming 3rd at last years nationals, Alex was upbeat about his chances. Despite winning race 3, Collins never pulled together a set of consistent results and could only manage to get 9th overall.

  • Mike Critchley, 12th - A 4th in race four was the highlight of Mikes event. With many port end starts he gained a couple of other top 10 finishes but most carried double figure scores.
Silver fleet
  • Iain Wilson (Bolton) 1st - The Bolton sailor was always a very quick competitor even when he was racing new boats in his old mark 1. Last year he came 22nd in 576 and this year with a brand new boat he was able to jump up to not only top of silver fleet, but to 8th overall. An incredible leap compared to his result last year. He became a Nationals winner during race 4 of the event.

  • Matthew Williams (Cotswold) 2nd - Matthew was able to finish second in silver fleet and an impressive 15th overall. The highlight of the Cotswold sailors event was a 6th place in race 5 and also carried two other top 10 results form the series.

  • Gary Butterfield (Bartley) 3rd - An 8th in race 9 was the best result for Butterfield. A couple of other top 15 positions throughout the series meant he took 3rd in the silver fleet and an impressive 17th overall.
