Ben Schooling clung on to win Kieler Woche (Kiel Week) in the Musto Skiff fleet, but by only a point from Alistair Conn. While Schooling never quite managed to lead a race on the final day, Conn saved his best for last by winning the final two races in very tricky and variable conditions.
Even so, top honours went to Schooling. Behind the two British sailors, Germany's Iver Ahlmann also sailed very fast on Sunday, winning race 10 and finishing 2nd in the final three heats.
This was Schooling's first victory at Kiel Week. "Really pleased to have won here, and I must admit I didn't know how close it all was in the final race," he said. "The race organisation and off-the-water scene at Kiel is great. It's nice to be back again, and great training for the Musto Skiff World Championships in Lake Garda."
A race win for Switzerland's Roger Oswald elevated him to 4th overall, just ahead of Britain's Dan Kilsby. The Netherlands and Russia also featured in the top 10 of the Musto Skiff fleet.
Today concludes nine days of intense racing in northern Germany, with a long regatta that started with the Olympic sailors and finished with the weekend warriors. The regatta is part of a much bigger festival of music and entertainment that takes place in Kiel city centre. With Hamburg bidding for the 2024 Olympics, there is a buzz about Kiel, an optimism that nine years from now the Olympic Sailing Centre built for Munich 1972 could once again be hosting the Olympic Regatta.
