A very light and shifty breeze welcomed the amazing record breaking fleet 67 Sailors who descended onto the beautiful sailing venue that is Paignton.

Race 1

The sea breeze filled in a small amount from the east and hit the sailors as they lined up for the first race of the 2015 Nationals. Tim Hand and Cliff Milliner lead in front of Iain Horlock and Alex Collins around the first mark. Changes were happening throughout the fleet with Collins getting up to 2nd approaching the top mark after choosing the starboard gate after the downwind.

At the top mark though it was Hand followed by Horlock, Collins and Milliner. Hand pulled away to keep a healthy lead to the finish but further back, Horlock, Milliner and Collins were fighting for position approaching the last mark. Milliner had sailed underneath Horlock to take 2nd and Collins finished in 4th.

Race 2

The race officer started the 2nd race promptly with Tony Critchley, Leading around the top mark from Mike Gibson, Ray Workman, Cliff Milliner and Paul Earnshaw. At the Leeward gate mark, the majority of the top guys went to the port mark whereas Critchley rounded the starboard gate alone, a bad decision it turned out to be.

Up the beat, placing were changing constantly with all of the top 5 leading at certain points. After that it was a standard finish as most boats maintained their respected positions to the finish line. Gibson 1st, Hand 2nd, Milliner 3rd.

Race 3

After a long wait for the wind, it finally came as a gusty and still shifty 15 knot breeze which had now swung 180 degrees filled in to the delight of the sailors. As the race got underway it was Iain Wilson from Bolton who led at the first mark after playing the shifts in the middle of the first beat. Cliff Milliner rounded in 2nd just ahead of Alex Collins in 3rd.

At the bottom gate, It was Wilson who chose to take the port hand mark to go the left of the beat whereas Collins, together with Milliner, chose the starboard gate to head towards the shore on the beat. Halfway up the beat it was Collins who crossed ahead of Wilson to take the lead with Iain Horlock now looking dangerous on the left hand side of the course. Fast forward to the finish and it was Collins who took victory with a fast approaching Milliner taking 2nd ahead of Wilson in 3rd.

So after the first day of racing its Cliff Milliner who leads ahead of Tim Hand in 2nd and Mike Gibson in 3rd. The forecast is for slightly more wind tomorrow and Sunday. All the sailors enjoyed a lovely Commodores reception/buffet at the clubhouse meaning they are ready to go for Saturday's racing.
