RS Tera Northern Squad ends Winter Coaching on a high

The RS Tera North squad ended their winter season of coaching on a high with two brilliant days at Leigh & Lowton SC over the weekend of 14 and 15 March 2015. Coaches Brett Cokayne and Bernard Clark were joined by Graham Bristow for these final 2 days.

The wind was just about perfect for the weekend, with the fleet able to make the most of the water. Saturday was spent perfecting techniques, with Brett and Bernard taking the Sport fleet and Graham working with the Pro fleet. Sunday saw the fleet afloat early in the morning to get plenty of coaching time in before the fleet joined in the club racing in the afternoon, giving them a chance to practice big fleet racing.

Presentations were made at the end of the day to the coaches, and also to Nicky Leech who has done such a wonderful job in administering the coaching throughout the winter. RS Tera Northern fleet rep Jennie Clark paid tribute to the sailors congratulating them on their skill development and wishing them every success for the coming season. She also wished every success to the members of the Pro fleet who are leaving the class and moving on to Laser sailing, where they will undoubtedly be able to put into practice all their learning from their 'Tera Time'.

The Regional team have worked hard to put a 'next steps' supporting strategy in place for those moving on from the Tera fleet and already have a number of sailors enjoying sailing in the Feva class, and it is hoped that the move of many of this year's Pro group to Laser sailing will prompt a revival of Laser youth sailing in the North of England.

As part of that strategy open 'transition' coaching will be held at Derwent Reservoir SC on 11 April 2015 – this is for any Youth helm who is moving into the Laser class or has recently joined the class, and is being funded by the RYA. Anyone who is interested in joining the training event should contact Nicky Leech, Youth and Junior Leader at DRSC (contact detail via the DRSC website).

We now look forward to our first 'north' event – the Northern Championships which will be sailed at Bassenthwaite Sailing Club on 2 and 3 May, with optional coaching on Monday 4 May.

The future's bright, the future's RS Tera!
