13th Royal Langkawi International Regatta - Day 2

by RLIR 2015 15 Jan 2015 05:57 GMT 12-17 January 2015

Strong winds and choppy seas make for great sailing on the Coastal Course

All yachts headed out to the open sea of the Coastal Course on Race Day 2 of the 13th Royal Langkawi International Regatta (RLIR) 2015.

Having secured Race 1 and 2 of the regatta on the first day, the Principal Race Officer (PRO) charted the courses for three races for the Racing, IRC-1 and IRC-2 classes, while all other classes raced twice on Day 2.

While strong winds made for great racing, the bouncy waters caused tremendous strain on yacht gear. Team MSA of the Sports Boat Class experienced a mast breakage which took them out of Race Day 2 and the RLIR 2015.

"We were just practicing some drills but as we went upwind, the mast broke. It is very disappointing because the crew and I were all geared up for today. I'm happy that we won the first race on Tuesday but because we did not finish the second one, we were looking to catch up. That won't happen now," said skipper Nur Elia.

RSYC Setia West took the lead among the Sports Boats in Race 3 but fell to second spot in Race 4 behind SMU. Setia West's more consistent performance however gave them the day's top prize.

The first boats off the start line were the Club Cruisers and Ocean Rovers. Sophia led the way in Race 3 but Rascal's lead in Race 4 gave her the first place overall today among the Club Cruisers. The Ocean Rovers also managed two races with Eveline winning both today followed by My Toy.

Oi! dominated the Racing Class again, making it five straight wins after two days of competition, getting up to speeds of 18.5 knots on Day 1 and 14 knots on Day 2 of racing, clearly ahead of the Royal Malaysian Navy's Utarid, Zuhrah and Zuhal.

It was again a battle between Island Fling and Foxy Lady VI in the IRC-1 Class but Island Fling, Jing Jing and Fujin were declared over the line in Race 5 and had to restart, giving Foxy Lady VI the first place for the day.

In the IRC-2, Mata Hari triumphed in all three races and was declared winner on Race Day 2. Andaman Cabriolet Nina managed to secure first place for the day with a win in Race 3 and second placing in Race 4, after 2 Fast 4 You retired.

On 15th January, Race Day 3, the yachts will go out on the Round the Island Race.

The Royal Langkawi International Regatta (RLIR) 2015 is organised by the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club (RLYC) and sanctioned by the ISAF and Malaysian Sailing Association (MSA), and supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Malaysia. The RLIR is part of the Asian Yachting Circuit."
