Albacore Northern Championship at West Kirby Sailing Club

by Mike de St Paer 29 Sep 2014 08:41 BST 27-28 September 2014

For the second year running a strong fleet of Albacores turned out for the 2014 Northerns at West Kirby Sailing Club. The first race was run in a very light and shifty westerly, and the six visitors and eighteen local Albacores were led home by local fleet sailor Martin Whittingham-Jones.

After a major wind shift and some slick course resetting, both the following races were won by past winners Judy and Paul Armstrong, the second race in a vanishing wind and strong tide proving particularly challenging, leaving the Armstrongs overnight leaders. Locals Mal Jones and Alex Jardine finished day 1 in 2nd and 3rd respectively..

After a quick look at the Sunday weather forecast - for even less wind - an informal fleet meeting agreed that the Sunday's racing would be on West Kirby's Marine Lake. RO Chris Hoppins squeezed an excellent windward leeward course in, and Judy and Paul put in two more bullets in ultra light and shifty conditions to become well deserved winners, with locals Mal Jones and Mike Hartley 2nd and 3rd.

An epic day for the fleet! Abersoch delivered an epic day for the Albacores with a base wind of 16 knots gusting 24 knots, with a SW breeze producing proper surfing conditions. To add to some of the carnage that produced, we got controversy with effectively two winners! Posted on 1 Aug 2023
