KSSA Regatta 2014 at Wilsonian Sailing Club

by Elena Setterfield 22 Sep 2014 08:34 BST 20 September 2014
On Saturday 20th September, 29 boats sailed by young sailors from many parts of Kent, competed in the Annual KSSA Regatta. Two morning races were sailed in light NE winds of 4-6 knots and with a strong flow on the River Medway the sailing was very strategic. The wind died completely during the lunch break until early afternoon when a window of opportunity to sail in an unexpected Westerly wind of 8 knots, but with a stronger tide now, made a 3rd exciting race possible before the wind disappeared again. The Chairman of Kent County Council (Peter Homewood) presented the Chairman's Cup for Endeavour to Chris Shelton, who was the lead organiser of the NSSA Regatta held at Downs in July 2014. KSSA Colours were awarded to Julia Judd, the Kent Girls Team Captain and Max Taylor-Nobbs who crewed the winning Bahia for the Mount Haes Trophy and won the Laser 4.7 class at the National Regatta. At the end of racing lots of silverware was won by the competitors:
  • Quentin Bes-Green – overall winner of the event and also first Handicap boat.
  • Julia Judd - first Girl Helm.
  • George Hyatt – first Laser Radial
  • The Kings School, Canterbury – winning school in school boats
  • Peter Freeland - best Under 14
  • Julia Judd and Mark Lightbody – first double hander
  • Pierce Seward – First Topper
  • Sir Roger Manwoods – highest place school - George Hyatt and Max Taylor Nobbs.
Wilsonian Sailing Club was an excellent venue for this event and the efficiency and organisation by the members both on and off the water was brilliant!
