Scorpion and Albacore Open at Lyme Regis Sailing Club

Lyme Regis Sailing Club hosted an open meeting for two sailing dinghy classes over the weekend of 13th & 14th September, the Scorpion and the Albacore class, both of which are raced keenly at Lyme.

Hazy sunshine and a sea temperature of over 17 degrees made for comfortable sailing but a rare Easterly wind varying between 6 and 14 knots, coming from the direction of Golden Cap, (the highest land on the South Coast of England), and consequent big shifts in direction caused problems for both the competitors and the race officials trying to set out fair courses.

Despite the difficulties Lyme retained its reputation for world-class race management under principal Race Officer Allan Tyler and his experienced team. Next year (2015) Lyme will be hosting the National Championship for the Scorpion class, and the club is fully booked for national championships out to 2018.

Both fleets were won by sailors from clubs other than Lyme who were better able to pick out the shifts, although local sailors were second in both fleets (and also 3rd in the Albacores) Lyme Youth section sailors made up crews for several visiting boats.
