This weekend Bowmoor SC hosted 43 young Oppy Sailors from all over the region for the Club's annual Optimist Open which also doubled as a South West Indicator Event. In almost perfect conditions on both Saturday and Sunday, the Club ran a very popular event for both Main Fleet and Regatta Fleet sailors.

Many families, several travelling from as far afield as Cornwall and Hayling Island, chose to camp over for the weekend enjoying late summer sunshine and an excellent North Easterly breeze for the sailors. On Saturday the RYA's head coach for the SW region put the sailors through their paces ably assisted by our own top parent coaches.

On Sunday, the Race Officer, Jay Williamson, ran 2 races before lunch and 2 back-to-back in the afternoon for both Regatta and Main Fleet. This year saw the strongest Regatta Fleet for several years at Bowmoor with 17 sailors taking part in coaching on the Saturday with 16 returning for racing on the Sunday.

Very close competition at the front of the fleet with Bowmoor Sailors dominating the top 3 positions. Toby Banbrook had 3 wins and a 3rd place to take top spot, whilst Josh Lyttle and Sophie Van Thiel both finished with 6 points with Sophie taking the second place having won the final race. Well done to all our Regatta Fleet sailors, most of whom we're participating in their first proper event.

Racing was even closer in the Main Fleet, with 2nd, 3rd and 4th place all finishing on 8 points. Drew Wright from Chelmarsh won 1st place after winning the last 2 races. Kai Wolgram from CBYC and Llyn Brenig won the second race to take overall 2nd place on count back from Bowmoor's Matt Beck who finished 2nd in the last 2 races. Charlotte Rockett from Barnt Green sailed consistently but just missed out on a podium position. Matt Banbrook and Zach Lyttle from Bowmoor each finished with 14 points; Matt took the 5th spot after an excellent 2nd place in the second race.

A fantastic weekend which ran very smoothly due to the support of all of the parents and lots of volunteer helpers. As usual, Pat and Stan deserve a special mention for fuelling lots of hungry sailors and their families. Well done to all the sailors, we look forward to seeing you all again soon.
