Duncan Dumbreck got the chance to sail through school and went on to catch the windsurfing bug after competing at national and international sailing events, before going on to found the windsurfing club at Bangor University.

The Welsh Yachting Association has contracted Dumbreck, via Colwyn Bay Watersports, to be a Sailing Development officer. He is to work with a number of clubs, Rhyl YC, Port Dinorwic SC, Bala SC, Llandudno SC, Bala Adventure Watersports and Colwyn Bay Watersports, to develop participation via OnBoard and other development programmes.

Dumbreck is based in North Wales after co-founding Colwyn Bay Watersports. "I'm really excited to be getting involved at the regional level and it's great to see the bigger picture of the local sailing scene," he said.

"There are lots of awesome clubs with enthusiastic members. In particular I am really excited for the OnBoard festival in September.

"I started sailing at school when I was 14, and quickly found my feet in team racing.

"We went on to race at international schools level and on the national team racing circuit. I then went to do my instructors course when I was 18 and went abroad to do seasons with Sunsail and Minorca Sailing.

"On my second season as a dinghy instructor I caught the windsurfing bug. I then founded the windsurfing club at Bangor University, organized events, then joined the committee of the Student Windsurfing Association and British Wavesailing Association.

"More recently I started up Colwyn Bay Watersports with a friend, where I now work full time as the development manager, T15 (windsurfing) and OnBoard Coordinator.

"In my spare time I love getting out on the water mainly windsurfing. I'm also a keen photographer, and particularly love taking watersports photos."
